Your complete guide to a Mexico visa for Indians

Do Indians need a visa for Mexico?

Yes, all Indian citizens are required to have a visa to enter Mexico. Whether for tourism or business, travelers with an Indian passport will need to apply for and be issued a visa before leaving India. Visa-on-arrival to Mexico is not available for Indian citizens.¹

Types of Mexican visas

There are two main types of visas you can apply for to travel to Mexico: a tourist visa and a business visa. Information for other visas, like for Indians with invitations from a Mexican organization, educational institute, or the government, can be found on the Mexico Embassy in India website.

Mexico tourist visa for Indians

Indians can apply for a tourist visa with the Embassy of Mexico in India. The tourist visa is valid for 180 days. It allows for travel across states within the country (except for restricted areas by the Mexican government).

Mexico work visa for Indians

Indians heading to Mexico for work are required to carry a Business Visa. A Business Visa stays valid for 6 months and can be issued as a single or multiple entry. To get a business visa, you must show evidence of employment and supporting documents from your employer. Or, if you own your business, you’ll need to provide your company registration, bank statement, and income tax return.

Can Indians travel to Mexico with a valid US visa?

If you have an Indian passport with a valid US visa and can show evidence of permanent residence in the US, you can enter Mexico without a visa. Anyone that doesn’t hold a permanent residence in the US and can only show proof of temporary residence will have to apply for a visa through the normal process for Indians. This also applies to Indian passport holders from Canada, Japan, UK, or any Schengen country.³

How much does a Mexico visa cost?

The cost to apply for a tourist or business visa to Mexico is listed in US dollars but is payable to the Embassy in Indian Rupees:

Mexico visa requirements for Indian citizens

To be eligible to apply for a Mexico visa, you must have a passport valid for a minimum of 6 months at the time of your trip. Additionally, you will need the following:

  • Application form and documents (see the section below).
  • An in-person interview at the Embassy of Mexico.
  • Complete biometric registration with fingerprints and a photo at the Embassy.
  • Payment of the visa fee.

Required documents for a Mexico visa

You will need to present several documents along with your application. Make sure your name on the documents matches your name on your passport. Also, everyone in your party should have their own application form and supporting documents.

Here is what you will need when applying for a visa to Mexico:⁴

  • A completed one-page application form printed double-sided. (Use this helpful guide to prepare the form.)
  • A copy of the Embassy appointment confirmation letter from your email.
  • Original passport with photocopies of the first and last page.
  • A recent passport-size photo with a white background. Your face should cover 80% of the photo; do not wear glasses.
  • An original personal cover letter that includes the purpose of the trip and how long you will stay.
  • An original personal bank statement.
  • Personal Income Tax Return (ITR) or Form 16.
  • The visa fee payment receipt.

For a business visa, you will also need:

  • An original cover letter from your employer, including the purpose of the trip and how long you will stay.
  • A copy of the PAN card or passport of the person who signed the employer cover letter.
  • Your appointment letter at your employer.
  • Last three months of pay slips.
  • Any invitation from a Mexican company.
  • If you are a business owner, you must include your company bank statement, income tax return, and company registration.

The Embassy of Mexico can ask for documents in addition to the list above.

Remember that once you arrive, Mexican immigration officials will require you to complete a Multiple Migratory Form (FMM) to enter the country. Keep the FFM with you until you leave. Immigration officials at entry can also ask you for details about your stay in Mexico, including questions like:

  • Why are you traveling to Mexico?
  • What activities will you be engaging in?
  • Do you know anybody in Mexico?
  • Where and how long will you stay in Mexico? Details of the return flight?
  • How will you cover your expenses during your stay in Mexico?
  • If you are on a work visa, who or what company is hiring you? What activities will you be engaging in in Mexico?

The Embassy of Mexico also suggests getting valid travel and health insurance coverage for your trip.

How to apply for a Mexico visa

Here are the steps to apply for a Mexico visa as an Indian passport holder:

  1. Gather your documents and complete the application form.
  2. Make an appointment with the reservation system online with the Embassy of Mexico in India. The appointment will be an in-person interview at the Embassy itself.
  3. Once the appointment has been scheduled, make the payment for the visa application fee. See below for details, and do not pay the fee before reserving the appointment.
  4. With all your documents and the appointment confirmation letter, attend your interview and biometric registration at the Embassy. It is recommended to arrive 15 minutes early.
  5. Submit your application and passport at the appointment.

Once you have applied, visa processing usually takes two working days. If approved, you must pick up your passport and visa at the Embassy of Mexico during the passport collection window between 3:00 pm - 3:30 pm Monday through Friday.

Paying for a Mexico visa

To pay your visa application fee, you must first schedule your appointment with the Embassy. It also must be paid before you go in for your interview.

The fee is USD 51 and can be paid in Indian Rupees at the prevailing exchange rate for the exact amount. It is non-refundable and doesn’t guarantee you will be approved.

Paying the fee from a bank account with your name on it and carrying the transfer confirmation receipt with you to your appointment is recommended.
